"Self-realization is meant to ensure fulfilment for one’s own self. It is not reaching somewhere or getting at something external, like going to the peak of a mountain. The attainment is in dissolving the mind and intelligence, and getting into the very core of oneself. In other words, it is like multiplying everything with zero."

Distribution in Wadakanchery Municipality Begins

Harih Om Tat Sat. It took the whole of yesterday for Sadhu Prof. Padmanabhanji, Secretary-Trustee of Hind Navotthana Pratishtan (Vyasa Tapovanam) and his team to pack the grocery items. To distribute to 700 people at nearly 200 places, we needed to make about 5000 packets.

This morning, Sri Anoop Kishore, Standing Committee Chairman, Wadakanchery Municipality, Sri Aravindakshan, Mangalam Councillor, and Sri Chandramohan, local Councillor, arrived at Vyasa Tapovanam, together with Sri A C Moideen, Minister for Local Self-Government of Kerala, to receive the supplies and distribute them at different settlements of workers. Sadhu Padmanabhanji handed over the supplies to the Minister. Many from Wadakanchery and nearabouts were present on the occasion.

One truck, loaded with the packets, left Vyasa Tapovanam for distribution. Sadhu Padmanabhanji deputed Sri Rajesh and Sri Vasu to accompany the truck to the distribution spots. Two more trucks with materials will be taken and distributed tomorrow.

Packing of Grocery at Chazhoor Community Centre

Sri Lalu and his team, with an authorization letter from the Ashram, left about 10:30 this morning for Chazhoor Community Centre for packing the grocery items. Packing lasted almost till dusk. A few more items the supplier will deliver tomorrow. Distribution in all the three panchayats around the Ashram is scheduled to take place from tomorrow morning.

Any societal service like this needs zealous volunteers with willingness to strive, often keeping aside their personal comforts and anxieties. Service and sacrifice is an inner urge of the individual heart, marking the real human expansion. Pressure of selfish thoughts then begins to dwindle, and fondness to help and serve others grows.

Before thinking of taking up the cause of distributing food items to the needy, what concerned me the most was the need for some hearty sevaks (volunteers). Luckily, Lalu, Midhun and their teams have the willingness to work for the cause. No doubt, they as well as their families and succeeding generations will be greatly enriched by this noble spirit and fervour.

I am happy to see how our Jamshedpur devotees have joined the local Police Thana team to run their community work of feeding thousands of people with care, caution, discipline and hygiene.

Police are our friends and well wishers

People generally consider police to be only law-enforcing persons, and as such, keep a distance from them. The police, on their part, have a feeling that they do not have the friendship and goodwill of the gentry. In fact, some of them have told me that their hearts are starving for true friendship: “As we deal generally only with criminals, it affects our mind. Even at home, we are not able to talk and interact freely and lovingly.”

At the same time, we should understand that the police are a great force with ample training and discipline. We can seek their assistance to deal with many civilian matters, where love, kindness and consideration are the motivation. Our people in Jamshedpur report that the manner in which the Sonari Thana conducts the feeding programme is exemplary. The cleanliness, discipline and order with which cooking is done and the items are transferred and carried for distribution to the recipients, perhaps others may not be able to do it so well.

Police-public relationship

I have always felt that the relationship between the police and the public should be one of closeness and confidence. The police should also recognize that the society mostly consists of the good and the noble. I once invited the local Inspector of Police to come to the Ashram in his uniform and address our Cultural Heritage Class. He did come and address the children, inviting questions from them in the end. How well and freely the children spoke! He invited them to visit Cherpu Police Station to see what was happening there.

Police can be of great help even in times of peace and orderliness. The public should be given to understanding and loving the police personnel more than fearing and doubting them. Power is more to be shown than to be used. Freedom is more to be realized and preserved than to be displayed or used lavishly!

The Gurukula training

One instance comes to my mind. Years back, we used to conduct in the Ashram summer Gurukula for young children. That was a time I used to walk up the hill belt here, showing the children everything on top – bushes, domestic habitats, trees, creepers, ups and downs and difficult terrains – making them walk through all of them. I also used to climb trees taking them along. We had set up a cradle for them, and also made a long-jump pit.

The youngest student in the Gurukulam, Bunty, was quite curious and ready to absorb whatever was said. I felt that when he was still young, he should be asked to come to the Ashram from Jamshedpur all alone, a three-day train journey. His parents had so much faith in us that they readily agreed.

I told him, “Dear Bunty, except for going to the toilet, do not move unduly in the train. You can stand, sit and also walk a few steps for exercise. In case of any trouble anywhere any time during your travel, the only place you should seek help from is the Police. Tell them about you and what you are up to. This is the only safeguard you need.” He reached safe.

I think all should share with their children such instances and thoughts as will make them confident, bold and adventurous. Mind has no limit. If at all, sky is its limit. It is with the mind and intelligence that Sri Rama did whatever he aspired to. All the excellences Krishna displayed were solely due to the power and grace of the mind and intelligence. The words he spoke over five millennia ago are still remembered and sought by the most intelligent people of the world!

All scientists, writers and heroic persons have the same mind and intelligence. Teach the children about their own inner resources, the potentials and magnitudes their mind and intelligence hold within them. Train them to harness these very effectively. Are you able to place the relevance and importance of our Centres for Inner Resources Development (CIRD)?
