Harih Om Tat Sat. Jai Guru. Jai Guru.
Normally this morning program here in the Vijnana Bhavan will start at 7 o’clock. Today we started it only at 7.15 because from 6.30 to 7.15, I was in the meditation hall with three of the newly initiated seekers. I thought of telling you how important is the need for everyone in this world to remain tied to his own inner centre. I say this many times but I don’t know whether my listeners understand the message!
Our whole personality is formed, shaped, designed from inside. The source of the body, the source of mind, the source of intelligence, the source of ego, everything is inside, inside, inside. Look at a mango tree. In the season, it flowers and following the flowers, the mangoes comes up, a very tender one, minor one, it starts growing, growing. Initially it is somewhat greenish white or whitish green. It becomes greener, then it becomes yellow and finally it falls. The entire growth of the mango has been within the tree. It takes nourishment from the earth, air etc. Even the power and process that draw the nourishment from the earth are inward, inner. In the same manner, the whole universe is born from the same inner source.
The universe is matter and energy but we have in ourselves something beyond matter and energy. Our body is constituted of matter and energy but when it comes to the mind, intelligence and ego, they are not matter. They are consciousness. It is from there that the whole growth has taken place. Once you are able to understand and appreciate this, think for a while whether ever since you wake up in the morning and go to sleep closing your eyes at night, are we not outward, spending all the energy in the body, mind and intelligence? It is a spending exercise. The question is when do you earn? You are not earning anything for the mind and the intelligence. Ever since you wake up, you employ the mind, you employ the intelligence and it is a spending process.
If you have to spend money taking from the bank, you have to deposit it there. Where is that inner deposit taking place? It does not. Therefore, in this context, does meditation and meditative absorption become essential and indispensable? The entire humanity will be far better if they know this truth and spend every day at least half an hour to 40 minutes to remain absorbed into themselves and to draw energy, strength, insight, inspiration, everything from within.
Sri Rama was fighting Ravana. He started discharging his arrows at the neck of Ravana. Every time one head was cut and by the time he was cutting the second head, the first one will sprout. Rama was amazed, he did not know what to do. So he stopped fighting for a moment, closed his eyes and remained absorbed. Then he got the clue. The next arrow was discharged at the chest of Ravana and he fell. All the ten heads and necks were being fed from the same chest. Ravana did not have 10 chests, only one chest. The root of all ten necks and heads was the one chest. One arrow hitting the chest, he ten-headed Ravana fell.
Wherefrom did Rama get the suggestion, the timely direction? It was from within. I wonder whether you listen to me and understand me properly. If you want to be a good, effective human, draw from your own inside. You cannot draw from the body. The body is matter and energy. It has got blood vessels, so many different organs. We don’t know anything about it. But we certainly know everything about our mind, intelligence and ego because it is something experiential and only by experience you can approach it. When a thought arises within the body, how do you know it? You sense it inwardly. So, in the mind, in the supra-material, the conscious hemisphere of our body, we have access through awareness, sensitivity, cognition and the like.
So, what I was initiating these seekers was I initiated them into a process of remaining quiet. I gave them a mental process by virtue of which they would remain absorbed and go to the very source from where they can draw inestimable strength, potential and what not!
Unless you make it a practice to sit, sit, sit, close your eyes, interlock your fingers, put them on your lap and then probe into your own within in the sphere of the mind, intelligence and ego, I don’t think human life can be ennobled, elevated, strengthened and enlightened. It is a simple truth, but paramount, paramount! To come to hear about it is very rare. Hearing to understand, it is still rarer. After understanding, to pursue it is all the more rare. And the rarest is the one who is able to understand it and know it and make use of it in his life.
