Harih Om Tat Sat. Jai Guru. Jai Guru.
I had dictated the translation, Malayalam translation for the next issue of Vicharasarani, ‘The Essential Concepts of Bhagavad Gita’ being the subject. We have come to the 18th chapter. In the 18th chapter, you will find the threefold classification of everything in our life. Our actions can be threefold - Sattvik, Rajasik and Tamasik. Our speech can be, our thoughts can be, our attitude can be, all are divided into three - Sattva, Rajas and Tamas. Individuals may be belonging to one of the three categories. Sattva dominated or sattva dominant, rajo guna dominant or tamo guna dominant. Krishna speaks about what this dominance will mean in practice. So, he is giving a number of features or characteristics to find out whether one has a sattvic dominance or a rajasik or a tamasik dominance. In the course of the discussion, Sri Krishna always speaks about sattva first, then rajas and then tamas.
This morning, I was trying to edit the DTP presentation of what I dictated. So, I am dealing with worship, what exactly it is and how the worship can be prolonged and made ceaseless and consistent. I don’t know why people don’t take interest in these matters. You worship or engage yourself in worship practices for about half an hour or forty-five minutes, preferably in the morning. It may be doing a pooja or chanting Vishnu Sahasranama or something else or maybe reading Srimad Bhagavatam and the like. Whatever it is, it can only be sensory and bodily or oral by the mouth, tongue, then with the mind and with the intelligence.
We have to progress from the sensory and physical level, at least to the oral level. These are the two visible notes of all our activities. Then we have to get into the mento-intellectual level; mind and intelligence level. When you take the worship to the mento-intellectual level, there will be nothing visible there. It is all in the form of attitudes, objectives and that attitudinal and objective orientation.
When you do a worship in a temple or in your own puja room, you have a picture or an idol, in the temple it is an idol, in your house it may be a picture or even something like that. Sri Chakra is available in various forms. People are keeping it in their pooja room and worshiping and we have sāligrama, a kind of stone, we have shiva-linga, another stone, all these are kept in the houses for worshipping. How much time does the worshipper spend for it? Maybe about half an hour or forty minutes. After that, the worship is broken and you get connected to the usual life and its contents. This is what happens.
So out of the twenty-four hours you have, only half an hour worship, that is 1/48th of the day. If you are worshipping God for half an hour and you are worshipping the world and world objects for the rest of the period, tell me where do you stand? So, the situation has to change and your devotion has to be prolonged. Ultimately, it should become wholesome, continuous and unbroken. My dear Children! Remember this. Why don’t you think about it?
If I can make whatever I do devotional for half an hour, can I not equally make all that I do devotional throughout the twenty-four hours? This is what you should think, think, think, think, enquire into. You feel that half an hour worship is very benedictory, anugraha-kara, then twenty four hour worship will be all the more so. So how to implant the devotional seed in your mind? How to make your devotion grow from its constrictions to the full expansion? Mind you, it is an expansion, it is to your benefit. Instead of being a devotee for half an hour, you are going to be a devotee for twenty four hours of the day. Is it not something like in the place of eight grams of gold, you are getting eight hundred tons of gold? By any stroke of imagination, can you say “No. I don’t want.”? Here it is not a product like gold, a material like gold with a weight and mass, eight hundred tons. In the same manner here, instead of half an hour devotion, we are trying to get hold of full day devotion.
When it comes to a question of full day devotion, you don’t require specifically a pooja room. You don’t require specially chosen flowers, water, garland, nothing like that. Try to think and understand that God, as we see in the idol, so we see in the whole world. You pluck flowers from the garden. Before plucking, He was in the flower, He is in your hand, He is in the space in between the two. What prevents you from thinking like this? This kind of an expansion is the secret of devotion.
People go on chanting, chanting, chanting, chanting, chanting, chanting. They may chant akshara-koti of God’s name and everybody says that “My lips are chanting, my mind is chanting but the real mind goes somewhere.” So, should you not try some alternate methods? So, this is a very important point.
When you start worshipping God with every bit and piece of your karma, action, there is no question of considering bad and good actions. All the actions you perform, you are offering at the feet of the Lord. Why not people think about it? A mind that is desire-free, is a devotee by right. You don’t have to write an examination paper and get cleared. When the mind becomes desire-free, no further statement. That is what we want. To make the mind desire-free, you have to understand that God, the omnipresent and omnipotent God will look into whatever you want even without your telling him. So, this kind of an advancement should take place in devotional thoughts.
So, I was editing that portion for publication in December. So, I thought I would tell you. Why don’t you think about it and come out with your reactions? Install God in your very heart, in your thought process and let the thought process be the actual worship offered to their very cause. It’s a wonderful wonderful statement.
