Suppose an event is going to take place, it is very unpleasant, may be the premature death or an accident or something else, normally our mind will not be prepared for it. Suppose you have some kind of a divine grace and the mind has to be somehow getting prepared, so maybe you have a dream which is somewhat a premonition of what is going to happen. So having experienced it, the mind becomes a little more stable and ready to reconcile with the event. Such dreams can be there. But the dreams can also be the other way. Suppose something agitates you, either as love or hatred or fear, that will also cause dream and it may not be very pleasant. So the right attitude I can tell you is that, let anything take place in dream. Whatever takes place if it is welcome accept it otherwise simply ignore it. It is not ignoring, you must develop an attitude of indifference. After all, it is dream and in dream anything can happen. So let it be. This is the right attitude that you must have.

I think by now you must have understood that our personality is a composite one. In this composite personality, we have the matter-energy aggregate called the body. Our body is matter animated; therefore it becomes a biological process, outcome and aggregate. xIt is completely made up of food, and food is a material substance. Along with food, water also is there, air is there, heat is there, but primarily our body is an outcome of food, food, food. In the physical body, whatever processes are going on, health as well ill-health, these are to be treated with food, nourishment, medicine and so many other things. That is why we have the medical science, very protracted and complex. Let that remain apart.
The remaining part in our complex personality is the inner, invisible mind, then the intelligence. Mind is the first factor which employs the body and which also receives the interactional impacts. All our problems are arising from the mind. Mind’s emotions, mind’s urges, mind’s attitudes, responses, reactions, I would like you to understand before going from here that the only factor and agency that can act upon your mind is the intelligence. The success of your life consists in how well you are able to employ your intelligence on the mind with a view to improve its quality, enrich and empower it. Don’t think that any problem of the mind cannot be treated by the intelligence. We use the intelligence for external purposes, and people are very successful. There are a number of scientists, a number of performers, executives, administrators. All of them are using their mind for external object purposes. All of them use their intelligence for external purposes. How many of you are using the intelligence constantly to improve the functioning, quality, response etc. of the mind?
Why I am saying it? Yesterday I had a discussion with one of those present here about dream. We have three basic inner states. One is wakefulness, another is sleep, and in between we have dream. In the wakefulness we are concurrently aware of what is taking place. In the sleep we know nothing. In the dream, in the dream, because it is a slipping from sleep, you are not as conscious as your wakeful state, as in your wakeful state. So dream is something that comes unawares. It just happens. As it happens, it also breaks away. The occurrence as well as cessation of dream do not depend upon you. Why don’t you understand this primary fact? Dream is a phenomenon for which you don’t have any control. So anything may happen in dream, and for whatever is occurring, simply, simply dissociate yourself mentally from it. As in the wakefulness, the dream experiences can be good, stimulating, pleasant, welcome. They can also be bad, frightening and terrorizing. Whether it is this or that, apply the knowledge that it is something that takes place without your knowledge and you cannot have any control.
What are the causes of dream? It is very difficult to say. Because how can you analyze it, because you are not aware of it when it occurs? Only when you break away from it you know it was a dream. So one point that I can tell you is that, any aspiration or ambition which you are unable to fulfill, perhaps in dream it will be fulfilled because psychologically there is an impact in the mind. Similarly, similarly, if there are points of hatred and intolerance, they may also influence our dream and fear also. So the dream is influenced by love, hatred and fear, and their multiples. So the best will be to have a uniform attitude of indifference and disowning about the dream.
I will tell you one interesting instance. I am interested in carpentry, I appreciate it also. There was one carpenter, a head carpenter, very experienced and intelligent, Shankaran by name. He was mentioning to me, in the temple above it was an old type of construction. In the old type of construction, these rafters corner, all rafters came from the central hub on top. If you look at the buildings here now, it is not so. They are parallel alright, and the length will be cut and from the corner rafter, the others will be parallely connected, you can see it outside. But in olden times it used to come from the central part. So every rafter will be like this. So they have to make a hole for passing a kind of a square piece of shaped wood log. All the holes will have to be in one alignment. But when it is slanting like this, say right, so to make the hole it becomes difficult. Here it is the same square hole but there the holes will have to be at an angle and each rafter will have a different angle. I don’t know whether you understand what I say.
So he (Shankaran) was in charge of rebuilding, renovating that temple. So some rafters had to be newly put there and the holes had to be cut. So the assistants used to ask, “Should we not cut it? Should we not cut?” He said, “Yes, yes.”, but would not do it because he did not know how to do it. So like that some three-four days or a week passed. Then he said he was in tension, he did not know what to do, he did not know the calculation. So he told me: these are his words. He spoke to me in Malayalam. “Swamiji, I had suddenly a dream. In the dream, my forefathers came and taught me the skill.” Next day with a bright face and with a clear understanding, he said, “Today I am going to make the hole.” and he made the hole. It is not in one rafter, quite a few rafters for all the four sides. Now how do you explain this? His forefathers were all gone. There was no question of their coming and showing how it has to be done. But his mind was so intensely given to the job and he was confronted by not knowing it, not having seen it, nobody has taught him. So that night he said, “The forefathers came and taught him.” But it was a dream, mind you. But the effect of the dream was as if it took place in wakefulness and then he was able to do the job.

I remember that in my young days my mother used to tell me a particular prayer. She said that “You chant this prayer and go to sleep”. Very rarely I give it to people. I will give you this shloka, you go on chanting it, and go to sleep and they avoid dreams. It is particularly focused on dream also. Like that with a good thought you can go. But in reality, let anything take place in dream, be like air or sky, so that nothing can happen to you. Then you will find, the dream gets filtered and filtered and you will have a very pleasant night.
