Poojya Swamiji outlines in vivid details, the Origins and importance of the widely chanted Vishnusahasranaama and describes the benefits of chanting it, jointly...
This is an English translation of Poojya Swamiji book 'Viṣṇusahasranāma Mahātmyam' by M. Prabhaakaran Nair. The original Malayalam book was written in the context of the Vishnu-sahasranaama Vishwa Yajna Mahotsava first conducted by Poojya Swamiji in the year 2013 against the backdrop of a visible and worrisome decline of values in the society. The book transports the reader back to the post Mahaabharata war period and outlines in great detail the origins of this widely chanted stotra.
Extracts from the Book:
From the moment the umbilical cord of a new born infant is cut, that living gains an individual existence. It needs separate air, water and food to live on its own. The mother who conceived and delivered the child, also needs the same set of air, water and food for survival. It is that beginningless, endless cosmos, Vishwam, that stands in support and protection for each one before and after birth.
Life is possible only after birth. And only when there is life, everything else follows. So, the prime cause for thoughts about God and for spiritual upliftment is life on the Earth. Just as the body hosts in it the one who is living in it, so too the world supports the body that abides in the world. Only by the grace of this prime factor, this world, there can be activites or achivements. For anything and everything this cosmic environment is unavoidable. This world itself is to be given prominence in the form of worship and prayer to God.

Krishna said (to Bheeshma): "You are able to have the vision of my divine form because of your devotion to me. You will live in this body for six more days only. These six days will prove to be worth more than a hundred! All the celestials are eagerly waiting, hidden in the skies, to see you rise from the earth. The earth will remain embellished with jnaana or spiritual knowledge only if you instruct it to others before leaving for the higher world. After you go, there will be none in this world to teach all this.
"Yuddhisthira, suffering from sorrows, is waiting with hopes. Let this opportunity be not wasted. The world will be blessed with a lasting good on this account".

The entire Vishnusahasranaama does not have a single verb! Neither does it specify any restrictions, prohibitions or permissions for chanting it. This Vishnusahasranaama, famous since ages, is for loud recitation and for sincerely appealing to Vishnu. All the sins will vanish by this recitation alone. The inner realm will become highly purified. The intellect will gain clarity and deep introspection will arise on its own. This itself suffices to turn a fool into a scholar! And a scholar will get established in Knowledge and wisdom.
